The Neuse Solo Race is the big event on the water this weekend, but not the sole event going on in town…
Circle Ten Art Gallery opens its ‘Art Vault’ on Saturday morning. It’s an all-day fundraiser for the artists’ cooperative at which you can bid for pieces of art. And there’s the Farmers’ Market going on Saturday, too.
Tomorrow, a new exhibition opens at Circle Ten — batiked paper. Meanwhile, the Oriental History Museum offers up root beer floats Sunday afternoon, while at the high school, the Pamlico Community Band will be playing. Details on these events and more going on this weekend can be found in What’s Happening.
With the Solo Race today, a Dock Quote from the old single-hander, Joshua Slocum….

Light winds today, and light winds still in the forecast Saturday for the Neuse River Solo Race. You can still register for the race… download the race registration form by clicking here… and head over to the Tiki Bar (race headquarters) tonight from 5-8pm and sign up.
It’s great sleeping weather, too. You can get a few more winks tomorrow and still take in the Farmers Market. Its new starting hour is 8:30am (and it’ll run to 11:30am).

Hundreds more people have registered to vote this year in Pamlico County – pushing the voter rolls to more than 9,000. If you haven’t done so yet, there’s still a bit more time. How to vote in 2008 is explained – click here.
Democracy is a beautiful thing, but onboard it can sometimes lead to mutiny. Such is the beauty of the annual Neuse Solo Race – just you and your boat – this Saturday October 4.
The weather is cooperating for the coming weekend – nothing but clear dry days in the Oriental NC forecast. If you’re planning for the Solo race Saturday have the light air sails ready… 5 – 10mph winds are expected in the marine forecast.
Pull up a chair at the bar – and take in this month’s drawing in Drawing The Town.
The tropical storm season might be winding on down. Kyle spun out a few days back. Laura fizzled out in the north Atlantic yesterday. Nothing in the immediate Atlantic Outlook – the season does however officially extend til the end of November.

They came from several states to meet in Oriental – it was the NC C-Dory Gathering this weekend in Oriental. Here are photos of the boats (and people) at Whittaker Pointe Marina.
It is a flower that doesn’t last long – but your eyes will smile if you catch a view of the flower of the season – the hurricane lily.
In the world of actual hurricanes, Sub-Tropical Storm Laura has been declared. Laura has formed in the north Atlantic between Bermuda and the Azores. Storm Laura poses no threat to the US east coast, or any other land mass for that matter.
October is almost here, and brings a menu of boating events. Saturday Oct 4 is the Neuse River Solo, then Saturday Oct 18 you have to choose sail or paddle – there is the Pamlico Paddle and the Greens Creek Challenge.
Sunny today and a high about 80, with some cooler nights expected later this week in the Oriental NC forecast.
The late Paul Newman shares a simple thought about life in today’s Dock Quote.
Saturday September 27, 2008
A bit less drama in the weekend weather than we’ve seen all week.
That’s good news all around, and especially for the C-Dory group meeting in Oriental today & Sunday. It is said to be the largest C-Dory Meeting ever – you’ll find the boats gathered at Whittaker Pointe Marina. Known as a seaworthy craft, the boats have a quirky, salty appearance. The event is here in part due to the success of a local C-Dory dealer – Mobile East Marine in Alliance.
The Farmer’s Market is underway this morning, and tonight pianist Valentina Lisitsa is at The Old Theater… all the goings-on are in What’s Happening.

8:50a The “almost a tropical storm” has passed and is now inland. It did drop .69 inches of rain overnight. This morning Oriental has closer to normal water levels (still a bit high) and little wind at all. A 50% chance of showers today, but just 20% for Saturday & Sunday in the Oriental NC forecast. Just modest winds from the south in the marine weather outlook.
